Today is the 40th of the ongoing peasant movement against new agricultural laws.  The 8th round of negotiations with the farmers' government is going on at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi.  During this time an amendment was proposed in the new agricultural law, which the farmers refused to accept.  During the talks, the government has also been told that they cannot repeal the three agricultural laws.

The government is ready to amend the agricultural laws.  However, the farmers are not satisfied.  On the demand for withdrawal of all the three agricultural laws, the government said - Let's make a joint committee to decide what amendments should be made in these three laws.

At the same time, farmers organizations have expressed dissatisfaction and rejected this proposal of the government.

On behalf of the government, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and Railway Minister Piyush Goyal are in talks with farmer organizations.  Prior to the meeting, the Agriculture Minister had said that the remaining topics will be discussed in today's meeting.  I hope all will help in finding a positive solution and we will also be successful.  The government is constantly saying that the MSP and the mandi system will continue.

During the meeting, the government had made arrangements for food for the farmers.  However, the farmers refused to eat the government's food.  They ate only their langar food.  Food of about 200 people was taken from Langar to Vigyan Bhawan.  In the last meeting too, the farmers had eaten langar food.

Before the talks between the government and the farmers, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted.  He wrote - Salute to the courage of our farmers who took to the streets amidst the cold and rain.  My appeal to the Central Government is that in today's meeting, considering all the demands of farmers, all three black laws should be withdrawn.

Tributes were paid to the farmers who lost their lives in the movement by keeping silence for 2 minutes before the meeting started.  According to sources, the government can discuss every clause of the laws to convince the farmers.  Before going to the meeting, the Agriculture Minister said that a positive solution is expected today.  Farmers' organizations have said that if the government does not accept the demands, the demonstration will be intensified.

All India Kisan Sabha general secretary Hannan Mola said- It is up to the government to resolve the problems of the farmers or to weaken their struggle by conspiring against them.  We hope that the government will keep a human mind.  Indian Farmers Union spokesman Rakesh Tikait said - 60 farmers have lost their lives during the agitation so far.  Every 16 hours a farmer is dying.  Government accountability is created.  Joint Secretary Sukhwinder Singh of Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Samiti, Punjab has said that if the demand for withdrawal of agricultural laws and guarantee of MSP is not met, the tractor will take out a march on 6 January.

The 2 December meeting agreed on 2 issues

  • ·    Case not registered for burning stubble: Right now, there is a rule of Rs.1 million fine and imprisonment for 5 years.  The government has agreed to remove it.
  • ·  No change in Electricity Act: Farmers fear that this law will stop electricity subsidy.  Now this law will not be made.
